US State Sales Tax Calculator
I've lived in five states and every single one had a different tax rate. That's exactly why I built this thing. Pick your state from the dropdown or punch in whatever crazy local rate your city tacks on — works both ways, forward and backward.

Nothing leaves your browser. I don't collect purchase data, don't track what you type, don't even have a server. Everything runs right here on your device. You can literally pull the plug on your internet and this thing still works fine.
Why I built a US state sales tax calculator (and the road trip that broke me)
A few summers ago I drove cross‑country from New York to California. Every time I stopped for gas or grabbed food, the receipt looked different. New Jersey had one rate. Pennsylvania tacked on something else. By the time I hit Nevada I couldn't keep track anymore. I was that person standing outside a rest stop trying to do percentage math on my phone.
That trip is the whole reason this US state sales tax calculator exists. I wanted a single tool where I could pick any state and instantly know what the damage would be. So I put together the base rates for all 50 states plus DC — the numbers the state government actually publishes — and wrapped them into a calculator that works in both directions. If I know the sticker price, it tells me the total. If I only have the final receipt total, it works backward to show me how much was tax.
Of course, state rates are just the starting point. Plenty of cities and counties add their own slice on top — Chicago's combined rate is over 10%, and parts of Tennessee push past 9.75%. That's why I added a custom rate field. If you know your local sales tax rate by state plus city and county, you can type it in directly and bypass the dropdown entirely. The tool uses whatever number you give it, no questions asked.
What this state tax calculator actually gets right
🗺 Real State Rates, Built In
I pulled the official base sales tax by state from each state's department of revenue. Pick your state and the rate populates automatically. No more guessing or digging through outdated blog posts.
🔢 Override With Your Local Rate
Your city charges an extra 2%? Your county has a transit tax? Cool — just type the total combined rate into the custom field. The state sales tax estimator uses that number instead of the state default.
↩ Works Backwards Too
This is the feature I use most. Got a receipt that only shows the total? Flip to the "total after tax" tab, enter that number, and the reverse sales tax calculator splits out the pre‑tax price and the exact tax amount.
🔏 Offline & Private
It's a free state tax calculator that lives entirely in your browser. No account, no upload, no tracking. I didn't even bother setting up analytics — I genuinely don't care what you're buying.
Questions people ask about US sales tax
Which states have no sales tax at all?
Five of them — Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. If you pick one of those in the dropdown, the rate shows 0%. Just know that some Alaskan cities still charge their own local sales tax, so the custom field might come in handy if you're buying something in Juneau.
How do I figure out my actual local tax rate?
The state rate in this US state sales tax calculator is the base. If your city or county adds more (and most do), look up your combined rate on your state's tax website or just check a recent receipt — it'll show the total rate. Then type that into the custom field.
How do I calculate sales tax backwards from a total?
Switch to the "total after tax" tab. Type in whatever number is on your receipt. The tool divides it by (1 + tax rate) to find the original price and shows you exactly how much went to tax. I use this all the time when I'm splitting a restaurant bill and want to know the food cost before tax.
Why are tax rates different in every state?
Because every state sets its own. Some have no sales tax but high property taxes. Others have high sales tax and no income tax (looking at you, Tennessee). The US sales tax rates system is a patchwork, which is annoying but also why this calculator exists.
Can I use this for business purchases?
For quick estimates, definitely. But if you're filing sales tax returns or running a retail business, you'll want to use the official rates and rules from your state. This state sales tax calculator is a budgeting tool, not a replacement for a tax professional.
Is this really free or is there a catch?
No catch. I built this free US state sales tax calculator because I got sick of doing percentage math on my phone. It's just HTML and JavaScript — you can save the page and use it offline forever. No ads, no upsells, no email grabs. I don't even want your data.
