How US Salary Calculations Work
This calculator uses the standard industry formula: Annual Gross Pay = Hourly Rate × Hours per Week × 52 Weeks. From there, it calculates deductions:
- Federal Tax: Based on your federal tax rate percentage.
- State Tax: Based on your state tax rate percentage (varies by state).
- Social Security (FICA): 6.2% of gross income up to the wage base limit ($168,600 for 2024).
- Medicare (FICA): 1.45% of all gross income (no limit).
Net Pay = Gross Pay − Federal Tax − State Tax − Social Security − Medicare
For example: A $65,000 annual salary with 12% federal tax, 5% state tax, 6.2% Social Security, and 1.45% Medicare yields approximately $53,950 in net take-home pay.
