What Counts Toward the Character Limit?
On Twitter/X, the following count toward your character limit: letters (A-Z, a-z), numbers (0-9), spaces (each space counts as one character), punctuation (. , ! ? ; : etc.), emojis (each emoji counts as one character), special characters (@, #, $, %, &), line breaks (each line break counts as one character), hashtags (the # symbol plus the text), @mentions (the @ symbol plus the username), and URLs (every URL automatically shortens to 23 characters, regardless of its actual length).
Media attachments (images, videos, GIFs, polls) and quoted tweets do NOT count toward the limit.
